The inventor was attempting to replace the horse, which had suddenly became missing from many northern societies…

A large volcanic eruption in Indonesia caused a climate changing event. Many Northern regions of the globe experienced what is known as “a year without summer” and massive crop failures… Crop killing frost was reported in Europe and North America all the way into Jun-July… WoW!

Many horses were lost because of the the massive crop failures but the bicycle was born out of that disaster.

The inventor called the invention “The Running Machine” and filed for a patent in 1818.
