He was attempting to replace the horse that suddenly became missing from northern societies after a large climate changing event. Many Northern regions of the globe were experiencing a year without summer and massive crop failures… Crop killing frost reported in North America all the way into Jun-July… WoW!

This natural caused event in 1815-1816 is recorded and know as a “Year Without Summer”, it was caused by a large volcanic eruption in Indonesia the year before.

Horses were lost and eaten but the bicycle was born out of that disaster. The inventor called the invention “the running machine” and filed for a patent in 1818.

200+ years later the bicycle is a true engineering marvel.
